Ingredients

2 | cups | Brown or white sugar |
2 | cups | Water |
⅔ | cup | Lard or shortening |
1 | cup | Raisins |
¼ | teaspoon | Salt |
½ | teaspoon | Nutmeg |
2 | teaspoons | Cinnamon |
1 | teaspoon | Ground cloves |
2 | teaspoons | Baking soda; mixed with |
⅓ | cup | Cold coffee or water |
4 | cups | All-purpose flour; sifted with |
1 | teaspoon | Baking powder |
1 | cup | Chopped nuts |
Whole or half nuts; optional |
Directions
Boil sugar, water, lard, raisins, salt and spices 5 minutes. Let cool, then add baking soda and flour mixtures. Mix thoroughly (batter should be quite stiff). Add chopped nuts. Pour into greased and floured rectangular or square pans and decorate with nuts. Bake in preheated 350°F oven 30 to 35 minutes or until a knife inserted in center comes out clean.
I usually omit the half or whole nuts and just lightly dust the top with powdered sugar.
