New year's torte

1 pack Finely chopped dates
1 cup Boiling water
1 teaspoon Baking soda
1 cup Sugar
1 Egg
1 teaspoon Vanilla
1 tablespoon Melted margarine
¼ teaspoon Salt
1½ cup Flour
1 teaspoon Baking powder
1 cup Chopped nuts

Directions
