1 servings

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
cup All-purpose flour
1 teaspoon Salt
2 tablespoons Brown sugar
1 cup Shortening
6 tablespoons Cold water
4 smalls Green apples
½ cup Chopped walnuts
3 tablespoons Sugar
2 teaspoons Cinnamon
2 tablespoons Butter - cut into pieces
1 Beaten egg
4 Whole cloves

Directions

Directions: To prepare the dough, combine in a food processor the flour, salt and brown sugar. Add the shortening and pulse to resemble coarse crumbs. Add in the water until the dough holds together. Remove dough and roll out onto a floured surface until ¼" thick. Cut the dough into four 7" squares. With the remaining dough, cut out leaves to garnish each apple.

Peel each apple completely, removing the cores with a melon-baller. Set aside. In a small bowl, combine the walnuts, sugar, cinnamon and butter.

Stuff the nut mixture into the cavity of each apple. Assemble each apple on a dough square. Brush edges of dough with the beaten egg and bring the dough up over the top of the apple and press into shape. Attach leaves with egg and place in a baking dish. Press cloves into stems. Bake at 400 degrees for 35-40 minutes until pastry is golden and apples are tender.
