Robust lentil soup

As a hearty supper for 4, simmer 2 cups (about 12 ounces) lentils in 8 cups water with 3 chopped bacon slices until the lentils are very tender and beginning to fall apart and the broth is thikening a bit (allow 30 to 45 minutes). Stir in as much of the Adobo de Chile Pasilla as you like (since its pretty picante, I'd start with ¼ to ⅓ cup), 2 large chopped tomatoes and 6 chopped green onions. Simmer 15 mintues, season with salt and ⅓ cup chopped cilantro (or a couple of tablespoons of chopped thyme or slightly less rosemary). Serve in big bowls topped with a little more chopped tomato and herbs
