Spiced black bean burgers

1 | can | Black beans (15- to 16-oz.) rinsed, drained |
⅓ | cup | Chopped red onion |
¼ | cup | Dry breadcrumbs |
2 | tablespoons | Bottled chunky salsa; plus.. |
½ | cup | Bottled chunky salsa |
1 | teaspoon | Ground cumin |
½ | teaspoon | Hot pepper sauce (such as Tabasco) |
Vegetable oil | ||
2 | Whole wheat hamburger buns |
Directions
In a medium bowl, mash beans with a fork. Mix in onion, breadcrumbs, 2 tablespoons salsa, cumin, hot pepper sauce, and salt and pepper to taste. Shape bean mixture into two 3- to 4-inch patties.
Prepare barbecue or preheat broiler. Brush barbecue rack with oil.
Cook burgers 3 minutes before turning, then let cook another 3 minutes, or until completely heated through. Lightly toast buns on grill (about 1 minute). Serve burgers on buns, with ¼ cup of salsa on each.
