Ingredients

cup Unsifted all-purpose flour
3 tablespoons Unsifted whole wheat flour
½ teaspoon Baking powder
¼ teaspoon Baking soda
½ teaspoon Salt
1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon Freshly grated nutmeg
¼ teaspoon Ground cardamom
¼ teaspoon Ground allspice
4 tablespoons Unsalted butter; melted and cooled (1/2 stick)
½ cup Granulated sugar
¼ cup Light brown sugar
2 Extra-large eggs
1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
2 cups Chopped pitted dates (10 oz)
¾ cup Chopped walnuts

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour an 8x8x2-inch baking pan.

Sift together the all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom and allspice into a large mixing bowl.

Whisk the butter, granulated sugar, light brown sugar, eggs and vanilla extract in a bowl.

Pour the sugar-egg mixture over the flour mixture and mix until the particles of flour are absorbed. Stir in the dates and walnuts.

Pour and scrape the batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 25 minutes or until just set.

Place the pan on a cooling rack. Cool completely. Cut into 2x2-inch squares. Remove the squares from the pan using a metal spatula.
