Doughnut wonder balls

Ingredients

½ | cup | Sugar |
4 | slices | Bread; crusts removed |
1 | Egg; beaten | |
⅔ | cup | Milk |
1¾ | cup | Flour, all-purpose |
2 | teaspoons | Baking powder |
½ | teaspoon | Salt |
½ | teaspoon | Nutmeg, ground |

Directions
Cream shortening and sugar. Cut bread into cubes, and combine with egg and milk; add to creamed mixture, blending well. Stir in flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg. Chill dough 1 hour.
Remove one-fourth of dough at a time from refrigerator; roll about ½" thick on a lightly floured board. Cut with a 1-½" cutter and fry in hot oil at 365 degrees. Drain on absorbent paper.
