Grandmother's date bars

Ingredients

½ | pounds | Dates; cut into 1/2\" thick cubes |
¾ | cup | Water |
1 | tablespoon | Honey |
1 | cup | Toasted walnut pieces |
¾ | cup | Brown sugar |
1 | cup | Unsalted butter |
2½ | cup | Rolled oats |
2 | cups | Flour |
1 | teaspoon | Baking soda |
1 | teaspoon | Vanilla extract |
2 | tablespoons | Milk |
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a 1-quart saucepan, combine dates, the water, and honey. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat, and simmer for 7 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes. Stir in walnuts. Reserve. In a large mixing bowl, crumble together brown sugar, butter, rolled oats, flour, and baking soda. In a small bowl, mix vanilla and milk, then stir into dry ingredients to form a crumbly mixture. Pat two thirds of the crumbly mixture onto the bottom of an 8-inch-square baking pan. Spread date mixture onto crumbs.
Sprinkle remaining crumbly mixture on top. Bake until lightly browned (35 to 40 minutes).
NOTES : Yield: 16 squares.
