Mary's french bread pudding

⅓ | -1/2 French bread loaf | |
3½ | cup | Milk |
½ | cup | Sugar |
4 | larges | Island eggs |
2 | teaspoons | Vanilla extract |
½ | teaspoon | Salt |
½ | cup | Raisins |
4 | tablespoons | Butter |
Nutmeg |
Directions
Break up ⅓ to ½ loaf of stale French bread (microwave for 1 minute if too stale to break up) and put it in a 1½ to 2 quart casserole dish.
Pour a little of the milk on the stale bread to soften. Whisk 4 island eggs; add sugar and mix well. Pour in milk, vanilla and salt. Mix. Add raisins and pour over bread. Gently mix. Dot with soft butter and freshly grated nutmeg. Place casserole in a pan that has about 1-2 inches water and place the whole thing in the oven. Bake at 350 degrees F for about 50 minutes.
