Old fashioned butter roll

3 | cups | Plain flour |
3 | teaspoons | Baking powder |
1 | pinch | Salt |
¼ | cup | Shortening |
1 | cup | Milk |
1½ | Sticks butter | |
1 | cup | Sugar |
2 | teaspoons | Vanilla |
5 | cups | Boiling water |
Directions
Mix the first 5 ingredients. Roll the dough out thin. Mix the softened butter, sugar and vanilla; and sprinkle on the dough. Roll the dough, jelly-roll style, and place in an oblong baking pan. Combine 2 tablespoons sugar and ⅓ cup flour and sprinkle over the roll. Pour the boiling water over the roll. Bake at 400 until golden brown. Serve hot. It is a bread dessert that is not real sweet.
