Saucy apple cake

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
1 cup Sugar
¼ cup Shortening
1 each Egg -- lightly beaten
1 cup All-purpose flour
1 teaspoon Baking soda
½ teaspoon Ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon Salt
2 cups Apples -- tart shredded
Peeled
¼ cup Walnuts -- chopped
VANlLLA SAUCE:
1 cup Sugar
2 tablespoons Cornstarch
½ cup Light cream
½ cup Butter or margarine
teaspoon Vanilla extract

Directions

In a mixing bowl, cream sugar and shortening. Add egg and mix well.

Add the dry ingredients; mix well. Fold in the apples and walnuts.

Spread in a greased 8-in. square baking pan. Bake at 350 deg. for 35-40 minutes or until cake tests done. For sauce, combine sugar, cornstarch and cream in a saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat; boil for 2 minutes. Remove from the heat. Add butter and vanilla; stir until butter is melted. Serve warm over warm cake. Yield: 9 servings
