Directions
This is another Great dough for cut out cookies. It comes with the Southwest tradition and is sprinkled with Cinnamon and Sugar as opposed to frosting. When we traveled throughout New Mexico and visited the Native American Indian Pueblos, we were able to purchase these cookies still baked in the traditional outdoor ovens. I believe they are called Kiva's, but I'm not positive. However, these are the official state cookie of New Mexico and traditionally made with 'lard' and baked for Christmas. This recipe comes from my cousin that lives in N.M.
Heat over to 350 degrees. Mix sugar, butter, sherry and egg in large bowl.
Stir in next four (4) ingredients. Divide dough into halves. Roll each half ¼ inch thick on lightly floured board.
Cut into desired shapes with cookie cutters; place on ungreased cookie sheet. Mix the ¼ cup sugar and the cinnamon; sprinkle on cookies. Bake until light golden brown, 10 to 12 minutes.
Approx. 4 dozen 2-inch cookies. Posted to TNT - Prodigy's Recipe Exchange Newsletter by SXSP63B@... ( PAMELA J REILING) on 4 De, c 1997
