Sticky 'n' gooey but good bars

Ingredients

1 | cup | All-purpose flour, sifted |
½ | teaspoon | Baking soda |
1 | cup | Quick-cooking rolled oats (see not below) |
¾ | cup | Brown sugar |
½ | cup | Butter, melted |
1 | cup | Semi-sweet chocolate chips |
½ | cup | Chopped nuts |
24 | Vanilla caramels | |
1 | cup | Whipping cream |

Preheat oven to 350øF. Combine flour, baking soda, rolled oats, brown sugar and melted butter. Mix well. Press ½ of this mixture into a 13x9" baking pan. Bake for 8 minutes. Sprinkle with chocolate chips and nuts.
Melt caramels with cream over low heat, stirring occasionally; pour over chips and nuts. Sprinkle remaining oat mixture over top. Bake for 20 minutes. Yield: 3 to 4 dozen * If you substitute large-flake rolled oats, chop by hand or in a food processor until texture of quick-cooking oats.
