Herman whole-wheat sourdough applesauce cake

Ingredients

½ cup Sugar
½ cup Brown sugar, packed
cup Honey
cup Butter or margarine
cup Shortening
teaspoon Salt
2 Eggs
1 cup Herman sourdough starter see recipe
cup Applesauce
1 teaspoon Vanilla
1 teaspoon Rum extract
1⅓ cup All-purpose flour -- white
½ cup Whole wheat flour
¾ teaspoon Ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon Ground allspice
½ teaspoon Ground cloves
½ teaspoon Baking soda
1 teaspoon Baking powder
1 cup Chopped walnuts -- optional
1 cup Raisins -- optional

Directions

Cream together the sugars, honey, butter, shortening and salt until light and fluffly. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing thoroughly. Add Herman starter, applesauce, vanilla and rum flavoring. In another bowl, combine flours, spices, baking soda and baking powder. Mix thoroughly with a wire whisk. Fold into creamed mixture. Fold in chopped walnuts and raisins if using them. Pour into a greased and floured 10-inch tube pan or use a bundt pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 75-80 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool in pan a few minutes before removing.
