Spiced prunes

Ingredients

2 | pounds | Large prunes |
Scrape of nutmeg or a blade of mace | ||
Splinter of stick cinnamon | ||
1 | teaspoon | Ground black pepper |
20 | Fluid ounces wine vinegar | |
8 | ounces | Brown sugar |
Several cracked prune stones per jar (optional) | ||
1 | tablespoon | Brandy or vodka per jar |
Directions
Soak the prunes overnight in cold water. Drain them well and pack them firmly into jars. Boil the vinegar with the spices, sugar and cracked stones and pour over the prunes. Make sure the fruit is completely covered. Add a tablespoon of brandy or vodka to each jar, screw the lids on and keep for several months before opening.
Note: The authors say that this is delicious served with chilli as well as cold meat or game.
